Accordion Competitions 2011 Classes & Rules

Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25. See Festival Timetable for competition times. Entrants will be advised of their individual class times.

Open Class Championship will be the last class held on Sunday afternoon.


GENERAL RULES: Applicable to ALL Categories

The following rules are a summary of the official rules. In the event of a conflict the official rules will apply.
  • A competitor must play a different selection for each class entered.
  • Competitors cannot play the same piece that they won a prize with in the previous year at Accordion Extravaganza.
  • Competitors winning a particular class 2 years in a row must sit out one year as a "Retired Champion" of that class.
  • Time Limits: For classes with stated time limits (6 minutes maximum) the music may be edited i.e. repeats and D.C. omitted if necessary. 5 marks will be deducted for exceeding the time limit.
  • Any class with less than 2 entries is subject to review by the Festival Competition Committee.
  • Classes will not be split between days or time periods. All competitors must compete at the scheduled time.
  • Contestants must be in the competition room 15 minutes prior to their class or they risk the possibility of not playing.
  • Levels indicated are according to the Palmer-Hughes Accordion Course.
  • Memorization is required for the OPEN CLASS only.
  • For the purpose of this competition a professional is defined as anyone who makes a living teaching or playing the accordion.
  • Name of selection must be stated on the entry form.
  • Bring a copy of the music for the adjudicator at the time of the competition, except for the OPEN CLASS, where music must be submitted with the application.
  • Electronic or MIDI accordions may be used in Novelty categories only except for the Digital Accordion Class.
  • Amplified accoustic accordions may be used in Novelty, Junior Band and Ensemble categories only.
  • Decisions of the adjudicator and competition committee are final.
  • For age-related categories the Competitor's Age as of August 1, 2011 will apply.
  • Entry deadline is September 2, 2011.
  • Entry fees are required for each class entered:
  •     Solos (all classes except OPEN) $10.00
        Duets $10.00
        Ensembles and Junior Band $30.00
        Novelty Class $20.00
        Open Class $25.00


SOLO CLASSES - OWN CHOICE
Each competitor will be required to play one selection of their own choice.
Age Categories
   6 yrs & under
   8 & under
   10 & under
   12 & under
   13 - 16 years: Category A - music level of Book 4 & under; Category B - level Book 5 & over
   17 to 35
   36 to 50
   51 to 70
   71 & over


SOLO CLASSES - TEST PIECES
The competitor will be required to play the test piece designated for his age category.

CONCERT CLASSES
Each competitor will be required to play one classical selection of their choice (no old-time music). Time Limit of 6 minutes per piece applies - no exceptions will be made.
Categories
Level 1 - music level up to Book 3 (Palmer-Hughes - see General Rules)
Level II - music level Book 4 to Book 6
Level III - music level Book 7 to Book 10


NOVICE CLASS
The competitor will be required to play one selection of own choice.
The competitor must have less than two years of study as of September 1, 2011.
All ages may compete.


DUETS
The duo will be required to play one selection of their choice, with two different parts.

Level Imusic level Book 3 & under
Level IImusic level Book 4, 5, 6
Level IIImusic level Book 7 to 10 Level III only is open to amateurs or professionals in any combination



NOVELTY CLASS
The Novelty entry must be a unique presentation involving more than just playing the accordion. Costuming and props are encouraged.
Showmanship is important. The entry will be judged on entertainment value. Think "skits."
Novelty entries must have at least one accordion. The accordion must be played in the act.
Each entry will be required to perform one selection of their own choice.
The type of selection must be stated or described on the entry form.
Time Limit: 10 minutes (including set-up time).


ACCORDION ENSEMBLE
The ensemble must be comprised of three, four, five or six accordions.
The ensemble will be required to play one selection of their choice.
The selection chosen must have a minimum of three different parts.
Two sections are available. The age of the oldest member determines the section to enter:
    Section A - 18 years and under; Section B - 19 years and over

JUNIOR ACCORDION BAND
The band must have seven accordions or more and be composed of players 17 years old and under.
The band will be required to play one selection of its own choice.
The selection chosen must have a minimum of four different parts.

Level IImusic level Book 5 and over



POP/ROCK/JAZZ CLASS
Open to amateurs and professionals.
Each competitor will be required to play one selection of their choice.
Categories
Level Imusic level Book 3 & under
Level II music level Book 4 & 5
Level 111music level Book 6 & over


DIATONIC CLASS
Entries into this class must play a true diatonic accordion.
Each competitor will be required to play one selection of their own choice.
No age limit.


DIGITAL ACCORDION CLASS New Class!
(Magic Vox, Roland, Scandalli, Cordovox, etc.)
Open to all ages and all levels of expertise. Marks will be based on utilizing the electronic components of the instrument.
The competitor may play one selection of his own choice.
Time limit of 5 minutes


OWN COMPOSITION CLASS
The competitor may play one selection of his own composition. Time limit of six minutes applies.
No age limit. Open to amateurs and professionals.


OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS
No Age restriction. Professionals are welcome. (See General Rules)
Each competitor will be required to play one selection of their choice. Time limit of six minutes.
The music selected must have a difficulty level of Book VII or over (per Palmer- Hughes Course)
Memorization is required.
A minimum of two entrants are required in this class or entry fees will be refunded and the class will be cancelled.
A copy of the music must be submitted with the competition application. If music is not submitted 5 points will be deducted from the competitor's final mark.
